Ascension day – The Sea Wedding - 4/5/2008
This ceremony celebrated the Serenissima Republic’s dominion over the sea. The Doge (now, less dramatically the Mayor of Venice) and his entourage took to the water on his official vessel, known as the Bucintoro and, having reached San Nicolò port mouth, threw a golden ring into the sea to symbolise his marriage to the sea. |

Vogalonga - 11/5/2008
From the early hours of the morning a large number of boats of every type and form gather in St. Mark’s basin, for the starter’s orders before setting out on a 30 km course that weaves between the lagoon islands before returning to Venice along Rio di Cannaregio and the finish line at Punta della Dogana. |
