Photos of forts and guided tours  The Amalfi Battery during the Great War
For those who wish to explore the military history of the area, a brand new (July 2006) book by historian Furio Lazzarini and published in conjunction with the Cavallino-Treporti Tourism Park traces history of Punta Sabbioni’s Amalfi Battery..

This agile guidebook analyses the reasons behind the establishment of the Amalfi Battery, describing its military purpose during the First World War after the defeat at Caporetto, when land troops advanced to just a few kilometres from Venice

When it commenced its activities (May 1917) the Amalfi constituted the most important defence of the stronghold of Venice and one of the main heavy artilleries of the entire Italo-Austrian land front

The volume is composed of 104 pages, and the Italian text is accompanied by full English and German translations. It contains 44 vintage photographs (some of them previously unpublished), a total of 19 construction drawings, sections, front views and military buildings, and 3 maps, including one map useful for visiting the coastal fortifications of Cavallino’s coast.

For information, contact the Cavallino-Treporti Tourism Park Secretariat.
