THE PLAY This project, which could be considered experimental, is included within the scope of our investigation work on masks, using particularly the techniques of gesture. Beginning with a series of complete Expressive and Larval masks by Renzo Antonello meant for Mime and Pantomime work, the purpose is to tell a story for all publics. Intended for schools, it is also considered for international exportation since the barrier of language is minimized by the strong mimicry and figurative component of this production. The project is based on the story of a central character, “Otário Doing,” an English tourist who comes to Portugal on holiday. The adventures of this tourist in Portugal serve as the reason for suggesting a series of common locations in our culture and in our daily life, including some excursions through our national history. Establishing a parallel with the language of the cartoon, the production, which relies on the cooperation of the cartoon designer and writer Filipe Abranches, proposes a good humoured approach to the theme that is dealt with in the manner of cartoons and comic strips. Besides entertainment, the purpose of this project is to develop the figurative ability of the young public and not just in visualizing spaces and situations suggested by the mimicry of the actors. The production also relies on a sound track that recalls our musical culture and is the responsibility of the musician Fernando Mota.
THE COMPANY FC Produções Teatrais is a Theatre Company which works on the Teatro Casa da Comédia in Lisbon and develops, since 1995, a research and a continues work on Commedia dell’Arte and Masked Theatre. The FC Produções Teatrais also organize, every year, an International Festival of Masks and Comedians, in a significant place in Lisbon: Castle of São Jorge, that provides a great environment for the Theatre presentations. There are also activities and presentations on the Marionette Museum of Lisbon. Among its most recent productions, “Otário Doing” one of it’s most original works, first presented in 2005, and in repertory since then, it’s an international show mostly because of the use of the universal gesture and mimics language. The company presents, besides spectacles of Commedia dell’Arte, plays of important modern and classical authors, like Dario Fo, Roland Dubillard, Gil Vicente or Carlo Goldoni, among others, and keeps a project of formation, a Mask School, directed by Filipe Crawford.
